Draft#1 Research Paper ( Free higher education ?)
In class, we watched a documentary, Where to Invade Next , which is produced and directed by Michael Moore. He traveled nine different countries of the world, to collect some good ideas from them, and to bring them back to the United States of America for its progress. This documentary is a nonfiction narrative and where Moore plays a role of an invader. He invaded “Rapunzel of Slovenia”, who well known as magical fairyland. He met with various university students, who study there without having any debt. An idea of Free higher education from that documentary, are argument made in my research paper. Free higher education, is a link provided to my first draft of the research paper. Who did you work with to compose your research paper? Was this a good approach? I work by myself to compose this formal assignment. But our professor gave us an option to work along with partner. The first lecture, we got in learning common was so helpful for how to do quality research. I never use Boolean operations of Academic search premier correctly before. And I think so this was very good approach for doing research paper. What rhetorical mode and genre are you using? In class we worked on these four different rhetorical modes, which are: Description, Exposition, Argumentation and Narration (DEAN). But for this formal assignment, I used Argumentation rhetorical mode and Research paper genre. When did you write this project? Good approach? I did write it on 23th of November and submit it today(30 November). I did submit the hard copy of my first draft of research paper. It was good approach, so that I have enough time to make another revised draft and upload it on my webpage before the due date of digital portfolio. Where did you write this project? Good approach? I did use google docs to write this project and it was good approach. Why did you choose to write about your chosen topic? Good choice? I did choose to write about this chosen topic because the issue raised in the documentary “where to invade next” is Should America needs to provide debt free higher education is very current and very important. It’s about the future of nation. If other European nations can provide free education, then why not the world power, the United States. Even though we paid more taxes than the European people. I think I made a good choice by choosing this topic. How did it feel to write this argument ("during, after, and since")? Do you have any "if only" moments that can help you revise the draft? I feel like this very interesting topic because I’m a college student and this issue is prevalent in college life. At some point in life every student thinks about the affordability factor of higher education. Most of the student after graduating from high school, did not able to pursue their career and start doing jobs for to manage their financial condition. Yes, I have “if only” moments that helps me to revise the draft. How will you revise your argument? I did submit the hard copy of my paper. After I will get the feedback from my professor then, I will revise and edit my paper and upload it on my webpage. Sometimes, I used site such as Grammarly, to check for any remaining errors. For additional help I will go to library and sign up for tutoring, that will help a lot to edit and organize my paper very well.

Draft #1 A good man is hard to find A good man is hard to find is short fiction story written by Flannery O'Connor and was published in 1955. I use the genre of fan fiction narrative to illustrate this story. It is story of a family, where grandmother insists his only son Bailey to go East Tennessee, instead of going to Florida because in newspaper article she read about an escaped convict Misfit progressing towards Florida. Like all families, this family have members who were not agreed upon on decision with each other. A good man is hard to find, a provided link to my first formal assignment. Who did you work with to compose your formal assignment? Was this a good approach? I work by myself to compose this formal assignment. And this was very good approach and I never used the genre of “Fan fiction Narrative” before in my life. This is pretty interesting and I learnt a lot of different genres of writing in Composition II. What rhetorical mode and genre are you using? In class we worked on these four different rhetorical modes, which are: Description, Exposition, Argumentation and Narration (DEAN). But for this formal assignment, I used Narration rhetorical mode and the genre is Fan fiction Narrative. In this genre, I took an original piece from a story and then alters its ending, characters and morals. According to my opinion the writer have more freedom and he/she can use their ideas, creativity of writing and imagination to any level without having any boundary restriction. When did you write this project? Good approach? I did wrote this early before the deadline but I post it little late on Oct. 24, 2017. I always to like to work ahead of due dates because it's hard for me to study on weekends and also I do have work on weekends. I always struggle in writing, therefore, I always finish homework early, so I can revise it by the deadline. It was good approach for me as well and as our blogs are due on Thursday. By working early saves me from anxiety of meeting deadlines as I need plenty of time to plan and work on these assignments. Why did you choose to write about your chosen topic? Good choice? I chose to write about this topic because we read this short fiction story in our class and I didn’t like the ending of the story. Therefore, I thought to rewrite its ending by using the genre of fan-fiction narrative. As well the writer of the story didn’t reveal the suspense of “how grandmother related to Misfit” at end. As as result I decided to choose this topic for my formal assignment 1 and I think so I made a good choice by choosing this topic . How did it feel to write this narrative ("during, after, and since")? Do you have any "if only" moments that can help you revise the draft? I really enjoy writing this assignment. Before I get started I thought how I will make 1500 words assignment. But once I got started, I was so indulged in it that, I almost finished it in one sitting. I really like it and after that it overcome my fear of writing as well. Even though, I unable to reach the level of the best but I see improvement in myself. Later on I attend conference and my Composition II professor explained me, why do I need to work on. Afterwards, I revised my drafts and did some improvements and post another draft. How will you revise your paper? I will work on it and go to library to get some help from the tutors. Sometimes, I use Grammarly site as well but reading my paper loud helps me a lot. After revising and editing, I will submit it to my professor, so I can get back his feedback. Every individual have difference perspective of viewing things. So I try to do more revision of my paper but sometimes time doesn’t cooperate with me. 1) Where to Invade Next: Work cited: Moore Michael,"Where to Invade Next” 23 Dec. 2015 Summary: In the documentary Where to Invade Next , Michael Moore is a director and producer who, traveled nine different countries of the world, to collect some good ideas from them and establish in the United States of America for its progress. This documentary is a nonfiction narrative and where Moore plays a role of an invader. He invaded “Rapunzel of Slovenia”, who also known as magical fairyland. He met with various university students, who study there without having any debt. The university is free for them and he met with the president of Slovenia as well. He invade those countries to take back their good ideas back to the the United States. Evaluation of the text: “Rapunzel of Slovenia” provide us a great example of debt free university education. He did the comparison of the education system of the U.S with Slovenia’s system. This resource material is relevant for my research paper. It also show how Europeans pay less taxes as compared to the U.S. But they get more benefits such as debt free higher education and universal healthcare etc. Source-2: Debt-Free Higher Education Moves Forward in Oregon Works Cited: Dudley, Barbara. Summary: "Tuition-free higher education" legislation that passed in Oregon in June 2013.” In this program students go to community college and public universities without any tuition fees. In this program, students have to pay some fixed percentage out of their income to pay for future upcoming student’s education. And student agreed for this plan, “Pay It Forward” was the most sensible state-level solution they found”. I think so this plan will be successful, if this will implemented in other states of nation. It decrease the burden of debt from student''s shoulder. And it will make student more productive This resource is relevant for my research paper as it offers solution to debt free education. This needs to passed in others states, so that every student get his right to get free higher education without any inequality. Source-3 Generation Debt: Works Cited: Konczal, Mike. Summary: “Education is a human right, and anyone who is willing and able should be able to attend an institution of higher education irrespective of their ability to pay for it”. It should not be limited to rich class people. They all escaped from education debt burden. Students from middle classes families struggle with debt most of their life and it is more prominent in African American and Latino students as compared to white students. “Studies already find that student debt leads graduates to delay marriage, invest in a home, or start a business”. In order to pay those debts, after graduation students start working early and accept job of low wages. Due to capitalism and inequality most of benefits are for rich class people. This is a really true, In this capitalistic nation every benefit belongs to rich white class. These debts severely impact the graduates for lifetime. This resource is relevant to my research paper as it provide us how wealth, class separation and economic inequality distributes benefits such as access to education among students disproportionately. Summary: “A 1 percent tax on concentrated wealth would erase student debt over a decade and bring the cost of public higher education to zero.” It indicates that how the taxing rich would make higher education free for public colleges and universities and it would relieve students under debts. The annual funding of $76 billion required to make public colleges or universities tuition free for students who are in need only by taxing to our 1% rich population. It would raise more than that and it would pay off all students debts. It make a huge difference and relieve a lot of students from debt. This source is relevant for my research paper as it explains how taxing 1% wealthy people will affect the education system and makes public colleges and universities tuition free for students. Summary: “For millions of students, America's university system is not a pathway to success but a debt trap”. It explains most of the enrolled students dropped their classes because of the tuition costs and they start doing job to run his expenses. An average graduate student under debt of almost $ 30,000. "Pay It Forward, Pay It Back" financing model, similar to ones used in Australia and the United Kingdom” should be start in the U.S. as well. This plan is working well in other countries, if this will implement in states, it will raise economic stability and more educated youth. This source is relevant for my research paper as it explains how US system of education runs by power of elite for their profits but not for public welfare. The gap of class separation keeps expanding, with economic system, where rich people getting priority in every field of life. It doesn’t provide equal opportunities to all students, who want to study irrespective of their financial condition. Source-6 The Argument for Tuition-Free College: Ellison Keith,” The Argument for tuition free college” http://prospect.org/article/argument-tuition-free-college, 04,April,2016.Accessed 21, November, 2017. Summary: “The cost of attending a four-year college has increased by 1,122 percent since 1978. Last year, 38 million American students owed more than $1.3 trillion in student loans.” This debt is more than any other kind of auto loans and credit cards debts. If government provide free subsidiaries to other business programs then why not make the public colleges and universities free for all students. America is the leading power of the world, and post secondary tuition free education must be provided as their basic right to each and every student, who is willing to study. The figures of debt owed by graduates are pretty high, it explains very well that how much debt students have and how it is more than auto loans and credits cards debts. This tells us that government needs to focus on student debts. This source is relevant for my research paper as it explains, federal investments can make public colleges and universities tuition free for all students who are willing to study. An investments in today’s student’s future is an investment in nation’s future. Where to Invade Next is a nonfiction documentary, directed and produced by Michael Moore, who plays a role of invader. In this documentary he traveled nine different countries of the world, which includes Italy, France, Finland, Slovenia (Rapunzel), Germany, Portugal, Norway, Tunisia and Iceland. A link to blog post #8 Where to invade Next, is provided, which leads to a summary of the documentary.
Topic # 1: Free education Research Question: Should America need to offer free higher education to its citizens?Argument: America should need to offer free college and universities education because education is a right of every individual. A country with more educated citizens, leads to more productive nation of the world. As compared to other European countries if we pay higher taxes, than why get only few benefits and why our country keep investing on wars instead of public benefits? Topic # 2: Maternity leave Research question: Should America need to provide paid Maternity leave? Argument: America should need to provide paid maternity leave with job guarantee to all mothers no matter either they are working for small or large company because that is a very hard time for mother to adjust with hormonal changes, infant and with daily life activities. Topic # 3: Abortion Research question: Should America need to illegalize the Abortion? Argument: America should not need to illegalize abortion because they need to consider abortion as women’s right. If she wants, either she can continue pregnancy or she can terminate it based upon her financial conditions and other personal issues. It should be her personal choice. In the documentary Where to Invade Next , Michael Moore is a director and producer who, traveled nine different countries of the world, to collect some good ideas from them and establish in the United States of America for its prosperity. This documentary is a nonfiction narrative and Moore is a invader, who starts his journey from Washington, DC pentagon under the authorization of joint chiefs of staff. He invades Italy first and get surprised after he learned about eight weeks of paid vacation and five months of maternity leave. He went to Ducati motorcycle company and met with the CEO, who told him about profits of company aren’t get affected by paid vacations of their employees. He said, people get committed to work and become more productive. They believe in the welfare of their workers. The meaning of welfare is meant different to them than the U.S.
The next country, Moore invaded was France. He went to Elementary School and spent some time at lunch room, where had conversation with a chef, who provided balanced diet to kids and decide their meal under the supervision of dietitian and other school officials. He had conversation with their teachers on topics such as sex education, contraception and their teen pregnancy rate is lower than us. He arrived Finland, who have higher global education rank in the world. They neither have any homework policy nor standardized tests. There is no private school exists in that country. All rich and middle class children goes to same school and they spent more time on other activities such as Arts, music and sports etc. A principal of school said, that “they try to teach them how to be a happy person, how to respect others, give them time to socialise with their friends”. Next he invaded “Rapunzel of Slovenia”, who also known as magical fairyland. He met with various university students, who study there without having any debt. The university is free for them and he met with the president of Slovenia as well. Then he invaded Germany, a country where work on 36 hours and get paid for 40 hours. He visited the pencil factory and wondered they follow this idea of working eight hours from the States. They have universal healthcare and real power. Students meet with survivors of genocide and listen their stories at school. Next stop was in Lisbon of Portugal, a country who had war on drugs, so they chose another method, which is not to arrest anyone who is using drugs. He met with three police officers, had conversation on the topic of drugs and death penalty. He went to Norway and visit their prison. He get surprised the way the prisoners get treated over there was completely different than US. “There prison based on rehabilitation, not revenge”. He find out that rearrest rate of prisoners is only 20% in Norway, as compared to 80% of the US. There prison warden are completely different, they have music studio, library and art center. They helps prisons to become a better person and one other thing that there police or guards do not carry guns. Tunisia, located in North Africa was his next stop, where he met with female doctor and talked about abortion, which they consider a legal right of the women. He discussed topics of women's rights, eradication of violence against them and their new constitution. He invaded at Iceland, where he talked with the first elected female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. He talked with several other females of business class and prosecution system of the country. At the end scene he visited back to Berlin of Germany, where he discussed with his friend that all ideas such as women's equality, rights of workers, eliminate death penalty, 8 hours work shift etc, which were originally pioneered in the States and the rest of the world do follow their footprints. This documentary end-up with a short clip from a movie, which prompts that America do have answers of his all questions but he just only need to look back. As the Dorothy can move back to her hometown Kansas with her miracle sandals. In my English class Composition II, we read six stories, which are Writing about What you don’t know, The Yellow Wallpaper, The Lottery, Redeployment, A Good man is hard to find and A bullet in the brain.
Blog post Introduction: In my blog post I am going to use three stories, which are A good man is hard to find, A bullet in the brain and The Lottery, to create a new short story using the genre of “Inter textual fiction”. Inevitable truth “death and violence” are the main theme of all above listed three stories. Violence is either created by guns and stones and the conflict is self vs society. Re-Genre Analysis: On Monday afternoon near around 3:00 pm, a PNC bank was robbed by three armed robbers and a person named Anders was shot to death. As bank is about to close, Anders insists to gatekeeper to open the door. When he get into line, he saw a lady teller closed her position. A dark complexion lady start standing in front of him start looking at teller with hatred and broke off their conversation. They warn all tellers not to hit the alarm, if they did they all be dead meat. A witness lady said, she heard “Oh, bravo,” Anders said “Dead meat”. He turned to witness woman in front of him. “Great script, eh?The stern, brass-knuckled poetry of the dangerous classes”. She told him “ Please be quiet”. But he didn’t listened me. The man with shotgun pushed a guard and handcuffed him. And other man ordered tellers to fill the hefty bags. A witness lady said, Anders said to her “ Justice is done”. Other man with shotgun said him to shut his mouth. But Anders said to her. “Did you hear that? Bright boy’. Right out of The Killers.” A man with shotgun said to him” What’s so funny, bright boy? You think I’m comical? You think I’m some kind of clown?”He just kept warning him, but Anders didn’t cooperate with his mouth. Then gunman lift pistol under from his chin and shot him at his right side of head. It exited from his right ear and shattered his right part of head. The gunman was Misfit along with his two other partners, Bobby Lee and Hiram, they were aloose from the federal pen. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock. In this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours. School was over for summer vacations and kids start collecting stones for the lottery which were conducted by Mr. Summer at the square. The black box grew shabbier each year: by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained. But wooden chips were replaced by paper slips. This dark tradition is not about winning a money. It takes lives one life every year for prosperity of that village. The grandmother was there as well attending that event. Tessie Hutchinson won lottery this year. People of the village start throwing stones on her."It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her. They stoned her to death. After watching all that, it upsets grandmother and she returns to home. After watching this tradition, grandmother was still in shock. In order to refresh her mind and to forgot about yesterday's incident, next day grandmother insists his only son Bailey to go East Tennessee, instead of going to Florida because in newspaper article she read about an escaped convict Misfit progressing towards Florida. She did have a fear of death and being caught by misfit. Grandmother dressed up and wore a hat with flowers on it and hide her cat Pitty in a basket in a car. Eight year old son John Wesley, daughter June Star and wife of Bailey accompany him to a trip. Kids screamed and convince Bailey to get a dirt road to that house. At sudden grandma remember that house was in Tennessee and she pull his feet. As a result Bitty frighten Bailey and he loses his control on car. And car get stuck into ditch. One car with three armed men stops. Three men come out of it and one of them was shirtless and they all have guns. At sudden grandmother remembers him, said “Misfit”."Jesus!" the old lady cried. "You've got good blood! I know you wouldn't shoot a lady! I know you come from nice. Hiram and Bobby Lee returned from the woods and stood over the ditch, looking down at the grandmother who half sat and half lay in a puddle of blood with her legs crossed under her like a child's and her face smiling up at the cloudless sky. |
